Mid-Range Safaris in Tanzania – Comfort, Value & Adventure

A “mid-range safari” strikes the balance between comfort and cost. You’ll stay in comfortable lodges or tented camps (with private bathrooms, good service, dining) rather than luxury lodges, but much better than basic or budget camps. Vehicles are solid 4x4s with pop-up roofs for viewing, guides are experienced, and the itineraries include main parks (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire etc.). You get good value without compromising too much on comfort or experience.

Typical pricing depends on duration, group size, season, and lodgings. As of recent years:

• For 3-4 day mid-range safaris, expect USD ~700-1,200 per person.

• For 5-7 days, expect USD ~1,500-2,500.

• If you include Zanzibar beach stay, flights, or private services, costs rise. Price includes accommodations, meals, park fees, game drives, and an experienced guide. Not included usually: flights to/from Tanzania, visas, travel insurance, gratuities, and sometimes optional extras.

The best time is during the dry or shoulder seasons, when wildlife is easier to spot and roads more passable. In Tanzania, this is generally June to October (dry season), and late January to early March (short dry). The shoulder seasons (just before or after rains) often offer discounts, fewer crowds, and lush scenery. Avoid the heavy rains (roughly March-May) if you want game drives without too many disruptions.
