Ndarakwai Ranch Day Trip – Walking Safari Experience
Ndarakwai Ranch Tanzania is one of the most unique wildlife reserves in East Africa — a private conservation success story located on the western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Spanning over 11,000 acres, this protected area offers one of the best walking safari experiences in northern Tanzania.
Today, Ndarakwai Ranch is home to more than 70 species of mammals and over 300 species of birds, making it a dream destination for nature lovers, photographers, and travelers seeking an authentic off-the-beaten-path adventure.

A Remarkable Conservation Story
Ndarakwai has a dramatic history.
During World War I, the area was heavily damaged, and trench remains can still be seen today. After Tanganyika’s independence in 1961, widespread poaching, overgrazing, and deforestation devastated the ecosystem — almost wiping out elephants and other wildlife.
Everything changed in 1995 when conservationist Peter Jones purchased the land and transformed it into a private protected reserve. Slowly, wildlife returned:
-
Elephants
-
Zebras
-
Giraffes, Elands, Buffalo, Wildebeest, Kudus, Rare gerenuk
-
Lions & cheetahs (since 2010)
Thanks to decades of protection, Ndarakwai Ranch is now a thriving sanctuary with breathtaking landscapes, ancient forests, open savannas, and abundant wildlife.
