While planning your dream safari in East Africa, the thrill of tracking the Great Migration across the Serengeti or relaxing on a pristine Zanzibar beach is likely at the top of your mind. However, when traveling to places of untamed nature where wild animals rule, it is essential to consider the unexpected.

What happens if you experience a medical emergency in the middle of nowhere?

Luckily, the AMREF Flying Doctors are on standby to save the day. Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, this specialized air ambulance service ensures that no matter how remote your adventure takes you, world-class medical assistance is just a flight away. At Gnade Safaris, your safety is our ultimate priority, which is why we highly recommend subscribing to this life-saving service.

What Are Flying Doctor Services?

Flying Doctor Services refer to specialized aeromedical care delivered via aircraft to remote or inaccessible regions where conventional healthcare infrastructure is limited. By utilizing small planes and helicopters equipped as mobile intensive care units, these services bridge the healthcare gap in rural areas.

In East Africa, the AMREF Flying Doctors are the leading provider of these services. Founded in 1957, their mission is to provide rapid emergency medical evacuation from the bush to modern, well-equipped hospitals in Nairobi, Kenya. Their flights are staffed by highly trained medical professionals, including intensive care doctors, nurses, and flight paramedics, ensuring patients receive immediate, life-saving care en route.

(Note: While AMREF focuses on emergency evacuations for travelers and locals alike, organizations like Flying Medical Services (FMS) in Tanzania also operate in the region, focusing on routine outreach, immunizations, and primary healthcare for isolated indigenous communities.)

Why You Need Aeromedical Insurance on Safari

During your safari with Gnade Safaris, we do our utmost to ensure everything goes flawlessly. 99% of the time, our clients return home with nothing but incredible memories and stunning photographs. But adventure always carries a slight element of the unknown.

Here is why having an AMREF membership is crucial:

  • Remote Locations: The best wildlife viewing often happens hours away from the nearest paved road or medical clinic.

  • Rapid Response: If a pre-existing medical condition suddenly flares up in the middle of the Northern Circuit, a flight with a full medical team can be waiting for you at the nearest dirt airstrip in no time.

  • Expert Telemedicine: Even for non-critical emergencies—like accidentally stepping on a snake in the bush—you are just a phone call away from professional medical advice that might allow you to safely continue your journey.

AMREF offers affordable, short-term tourist plans designed specifically for safari-goers. These memberships ensure you are never left stranded.

  • $29 per person for up to 14 days

  • $39 per person for up to 2 months

Extended Regional Rates (Up to 1000 km radius from Nairobi):

Ideal for comprehensive itineraries covering all of Tanzania, including the mainland and the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia.

  • $45 per person for up to 14 days

  • $60 per person for up to 2 months

Understanding the Limitations: What is NOT Covered?

While the Flying Doctors provide unparalleled emergency transport, it is vital to understand the scope of their services to ensure you are fully protected.

  1. It is NOT Standard Health Insurance: AMREF assesses the emergency, provides the specialized transport, and stabilizes you during the flight. However, all hospital costs, medical treatments, and medicines upon arrival are on you.

  2. Visa Fees: If you are evacuated from Tanzania to Nairobi, any costs associated with a Kenyan visa are your responsibility (though AMREF will help smoothen the immigration process to ensure you reach the hospital in time).

  3. Mount Meru Climbs: Evacuations from Mount Meru are explicitly NOT covered by the Flying Doctors Insurance.

Special Note on Mount Kilimanjaro Evacuations

If you encounter a life-threatening situation while trekking Mount Kilimanjaro, Flying Doctors can arrange high-altitude helicopter evacuations to fly you to a hospital in Moshi. However, please note that the maximum landing altitude strictly depends on real-time weather, terrain conditions, and approximate weight-lift limits.

Flying Doctors vs. Standard Travel Insurance

Because of the limitations mentioned above, AMREF membership does not replace the need for comprehensive travel and health insurance.

At Gnade Safaris, we require all our clients to carry proper travel insurance. A robust policy works hand-in-hand with your Flying Doctors membership by covering:

  • In-patient and out-patient hospital bills after the evacuation.

  • Trip cancellation or interruption.

  • Damage to, or loss of, valuable luggage and photography equipment.

It is highly advisable to sign up for cancellation insurance well in advance, as long-haul trips often have strict refund policies. Always check with your primary insurer to ensure high-altitude trekking (if applicable) and international hospital stays are fully covered.
