Mount Meru: Tanzania's Most Scenic and Rewarding Trek
While Mount Kilimanjaro often steals the spotlight, Mount Meru stands tall as Tanzania’s second-highest peak and one of Africa’s most beautiful, uncrowded trekking destinations. Towering at 4,562 meters above the lush landscapes of Arusha National Park, a Mount Meru expedition is much more than just a mountain climb—it is a thrilling walking safari and a true wilderness adventure combined into one.
For travelers seeking a quieter, more exclusive high-altitude experience, or for those looking for the ultimate acclimatization climb before tackling Kilimanjaro, Gnade Safaris offers expertly guided Mount Meru treks perfectly tailored to your pace and comfort.

Why Climb Mount Meru?
Mount Meru is the perfect choice for adventure seekers looking for an authentic mountain experience away from the heavy foot traffic of traditional routes.
A True Wilderness Experience: Because Mount Meru is located entirely within Arusha National Park, your trek begins as a walking safari. You will hike past herds of buffalo, grazing giraffes, and swinging colobus monkeys—an experience you simply cannot get on Kilimanjaro.
The Ultimate Acclimatization: If your ultimate goal is the "Roof of Africa," summiting Mount Meru is widely considered the best way to physically and mentally prepare. It allows your body to safely adapt to higher altitudes, significantly increasing your summit success rate on Kilimanjaro.
Stunning Scenery: The trail takes you through diverse ecological zones, from dense, wildlife-rich montane forests and giant heather zones to the dramatic, barren volcanic ridge of the summit. The views of the horseshoe crater, the towering Ash Cone, and a sunrise illuminating Kilimanjaro in the distance are absolutely unmatched.
The Trekking Experience
A Mount Meru climb is an immersive, moderately challenging endeavor. With Gnade Safaris, you are fully supported by our professional mountain guides, porters, and a dedicated armed park ranger for your safety.
The Standard 4-Day Itinerary
While a 3-day rapid ascent is possible for highly experienced hikers, we strongly recommend our 4-Day Mount Meru Trek for better acclimatization and a more enjoyable pace.
Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m)
Begin your journey with a scenic walk through open grasslands and dense forest canopies. Keep your camera ready for wildlife sightings as you gently ascend to your first overnight stop.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3,570 m)
The trail steepens today, winding through a mystical zone of giant heather and lush moorland. You will arrive at Saddle Hut with enough time to take an optional short acclimatization hike up to Little Meru (3,801 m) for spectacular sunset views.
Day 3: Summit Day – Socialist Peak (4,562 m) and Descent
An early alpine start (around midnight) takes you navigating steep ridges and volcanic scree under the stars. Reach Socialist Peak just as the sun rises over the African plains, before beginning your descent back down to Miriakamba Hut.
Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate
Enjoy a leisurely final descent through the forest, reflecting on your incredible achievement before transferring back to Arusha for a well-deserved rest.
Best Time to Trek
To ensure optimal safety and the clearest summit views, timing is everything:
June to October (Dry Season): This is the premier time for climbing. The trails are dry, the skies are clear, and wildlife gathers around the remaining water sources in the lower forests.
December to February: A shorter dry window that offers excellent, clear visibility, though temperatures near the summit can be colder.
